Significance of Arafa

By Imam Abdi Dahir

My dear brothers and sisters in Islam, there is no anything that will happen Yawmul Qiyaamah, on the Day of Judgement accept what Allah has given us the examples in this dunya that thing that will happen. Allah (swt) He told us there is anhar in the jannah . There’s a different river in the jannah, and He gives us those rivers in this dunya, and a house, and the women, all these things are here. He told us also that He will gather the first one and the last one, all of them, and that gathering and the Mahsher Al-Musaggar when Allah will gather the human beings, all of them, in one place, Allah will show you Subhanahu Jalla Jalaluhu that example on Sunday, this Sunday inshaa’allah. Muslims will start the hajj tomorrow Yawmul Tharviyya, the eighth of Dhul-Hijjah. Sunday is Yawmul-Arafa. Rasulullah (saws) said, “the whole hajj is Arafa.” Meaning if you miss Arafa, you missed the whole thing. Arafa is Mahsher Al-Musaggar is when Allah gathers the human beings from the beginning to the end, that’s the same thing. The only thing different is they’re starting to wear some clothes, but at that time they were not clothed, they were not wearing anything. Subhanallah, they will be naked. This day, Yawmul-Arafa is the greatest day of the whole year, a day. The best day in the whole year is Yawmul-Arafa. Yawmul-Arafa has the virtues.

One of the first things is on the day of Arafa, Allah completes Qur’anul Kareem. Allah completed the wahi, not the Qur’an but the wahi. There was a few ayat and surah after Yawmul-Arafa, but there isn’t any ruling so Allah (swt) basically completed the Yawmul-Arafa and the deen. He said, “(Quran – 5:03)  Today I completed your religion,” it was the Yawmul-Arafa, the day that Allah revealed that ayat, and it was also Friday, so the Jewish man came to Umar ibn Al-Khattab (ra). He said, “Oh Umar, if we have the day you have, we will make the eid.” He said, “Which day are you talking about?” He said, “The day of Arafa.” He said, “I know when Allah revealed this surah, this ayat, it was the day of Arafa on Friday that Allah revealed (Quran – 5:03). On this day, this religion, Allah completes on the day of Arafa that will show you the fada-il and the virtues of this day.

Secondly, Allah swear on the Day of Arafa, and He only swears or take oath unless it’s something so great the promised day is the Yawmul-Qiyaamah. What is the Yawmul-Maw’ud? because there are two million or three that will attend in that place (Quran – 85:1,2,3). He makes the tafsir of (Quran – 89:03) this ayat he says, Yawmul-Arafa Al-Witru in this ayah is Yawmul-Arafa the day after Eidl-Adha. The best day in the whole year is the Yawmul-Arafa. The night, we have the Lailatul Qadr. “There is no other day that Allah frees more slaves from Hellfire,” meaning they were supposed to go to Hellfire because of what they did, the sin they commit, but Allah will forgive those people, so they will become the people of Jannah, subhanallah. He will free so many people from Hellfire. Actually inshaa’allah those two or three million who are standing in Arafa, Allah will forgive them and free them from the Hellfire. Those from around the globe who are hoping for Magfirah for that day. There is no other day that Allah will free the slaves from Hellfire like the Yawmul-Arafa. He is so close to His servant. We don’t know how He gets close but we know that Allah gets close to them and He will tell the malaikah, “Look, my servant, they come to Me and the situation they are. They are so humble. What are they looking for? They are looking for the maghfirah.” Allah is so generous and the kareem, He will give them the maghfirah. We want to try to be one of those that Allah (swt) frees from the Hellfire on the day, subhanallah.

He’s so close, it’s rahmah. He’s so close to them Do you know Mubaha? It means when you get something and you go around and you say, “See what I got?” like someone who passed a test and goes around his classmates telling them, “Look at the grade I got.” Allah will tell them, “Look, malaikah, look, my servant, they came around the globe and they are standing here and Allah will give them the rahmah. When you fast on the Day of Arafa, will be Sunday, there is a hadith Rasulullah (saws) said, “Don’t fast on Friday except the day before or the day after.” If you started today, it’s a good thing to also fast tomorrow and after tomorrow, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. If you cannot fast, there’s another hadith, he said, “Don’t fast on Saturday except the wajib.” When you add those ahadith, if you are capable to do it, you fast today and tomorrow, and after tomorrow, already today is here. If you don’t fast then fast on Sunday. If you want to combine the both of them, inshaa’allah, you can do it. At least on that day of Arafa, The person making the hajj, it’s not sunnah for him to fast. Rasulullah (saws) did not fast on the day of Arafa, but he encouraged the people who are `not in Arafa to fast. Why do you not fast on the day of Arafa? Because you need the energy to make du’a. This is the best day you have. You have to have the energy to make the du’a, subhanallah. They were arguing if Rasulullah (saws) was fasting or not, so the wife of Al-Abbas sent milk to the Rasulullah (saws), and he drank the milk in front of all the hujjat because he was riding his she-camel. so they noticed that he was not fasting.

It is not good for the person who is in Arafa to fast, but those who are not in Arafa, we need to fast. It’s not wajib, it’s recommended, it’s sunnah. You will get the Ajab that Allah will forgive you for two years, sins of the previous year and the coming year. How will Allah for the coming year when I have not committed anything yet? what He will do before you do, if you do it, how are you going to commit it? He (swt) will forgive you. Now when you go the around money, they will tell you, we’ll give you the credit for it, so the next time you come, we will give you that money. Allah (swt) will forgive you on this year and the years coming in His own way, those are not hujjat, it’s highly recommended to fast that day, so that day it’s going to be Sunday. If you want to fast on Sunday only, you can fast. If you want to add Saturday, you can add, inshaa’allah. If you started today, it’s even better. Also on Yawmil-Arafa, Shaitaan will become so sad. He will become so small. Allah will make him so small. On yawm, Allah will give His ni’mah to His servants because maybe the Shaitaan was working on a person for 50 years, or 60 years, or 70 years, and then on that day, the person will go to Arafa and make the hajj, and Allah will forgive him for all the things he did all those years. The Shaitaan will be so sad and so mad, “Look at effort I did here, how much effort I put in here, and then Allah will forgive him?” Maybe six hours or seven hours, Allah will forgive him.

Rasulullah (saws) says, There is no other day that Shaitaan is so humiliated, so small, and so angry like the day of Arafa except the Yawmul-Badr because he was with Abu Jahl, and he made himself from the Arab tribe. When he saw the malaikah, he could not take it. He said, and he ran away. He said, “I see something that you cannot see, and I fear Allah (rabbul a’lameen). On the Day of Badr, when he saw the malaikah, he was so humiliated. This is why Rasulullah (saws) said, “When you make the sin, don’t say, “Look what the Shaitaan did to me. Shaitaan, wallahi, misled me.” He will become huge and say bikuwwathi because of my power, I did this thing.” What you should say is Au’udhu billahi min-ash shaitan ir-rajeem He will grow smaller and smaller, and he will become so humiliated.” On that day when he saw Why did he become so mad and so small because what he saw the Rahmah and the mercy of Allah descending, and how huge the sins and the dhunoob, Allah forgave that day. When he saw those things, he became so mad.

On Yamul-Arafa, we hope Allah will never reject a du’a either the person who is in Arafa or the person who is not in Arafa who is making the du’a. There is a huge rajah, and the hope that Allah will accept the du’a on that day. The best du’a or supplication that you can make is the du’a and supplication you make on the day of Arafa, this Sunday coming. What time should I make the du’a? Is there zawal or my zawal? You combine the both of them. When the hujjat, they’re standing in Arafa after the zawal until sunset and ours also, you combine them both. Sometimes people ask me, “With the hujjat or ours` because the time is different, maybe seven hours is different, you combine them both on Sunday when you have nothing to do usually most people don’t work on Sundays, so what do you do? Fast on that day then pray Dhuhr and you sit down in your house or a masjid somewhere making the du’a and tasbeeh and maghfirah. People used to wait for this day to come and the saliheen, they used to say, “We never make the du’a on Yawmul-Arafa except when you see the du’a before the next Arafa.” We need so many things. Make an effort at least five or four hours like the hujjat, make the tasbeeh, the tahlil and the tahmeed.

My dear brothers and sisters in Islam, and the righteous people before us on the day of Arafa, they used to become so humble. One of those is Mutarrif ibn Abdillah and the bakr, Ibn Alalbakri Muzari, they both attended the Arafa during one of those years. Mutarrif ibn Abdillah ibn Shakir who was a great tabi’ee. He saw the companions of Rasulullah (saws). He saw so many people in Arafa in so many numbers on Yamul-Arafa standing there. He looked and said, “Oh Allah, don’t reject the du’a of the people standing here because of me.” He thought he was the worst in that Mouqif of the millions who go there, he is the worst. He would look at another Mouqif another year and he said, “So beautiful a place and a beautiful place except that I am here.” So humble. When you are humble, Allah (swt) will give you His rahmah.

Fulailu-bin-iyalu Al-thameemi He was a tabi’ee too, and he was one of the righteous people, subhanallah. On the day of Arafa, he looked at people who were making tasbeeh and crying because when you get to Arafa, subhanallah, the whole thing will change even if your heart is very tough and strong, something will happen to you, subhanallah, and you will see yourself crying on that day. and then he would look at them and said, “Those who are humble and also those people have the raja and the hope of Allah (swt), do you think if those people who come here crying, making the du’a, if they asked a man one cent, will he reject them? They would say no. What do you think Allah (swt)?” This dunya is not equal to one cent, He will give all of them. A very simple thing, one cent or less than one cent or less than one cent, subhanallah.

Abdullah Ibn Mubarak, one of the great tabi’ee, the great scholar and one of the righteous people and rarely Allah would give the people what He would give this man. He was Abdullah and he was a Mubarak also. He said, “I came on the ninth of Arafa, the afternoon, and I ask you who is the worst person in this gathering here? He said, “The one who is not thinking Allah will not forgive him,” that’s the worst person.” How can you go all the way there and you stand up in Arafa, and think Allah will forgive you?

My dear brothers and sisters in Islam, it is a great day on the day of Arafa and those three days left tomorrow and after tomorrow, and the day of Eid, Allah will free His ibad Make the du’a and tasbeeh. The only thing you worry about is yourself, and your dhunoob, and your sin, show Allah (swt) to cure you, to give you the dunya, to give you children, to give you well-being, to give you all those things, make that du’a on Sunday inshaa’allah. Prepare yourself to gain something for those few days that tomorrow and after tomorrow, inshaa’allah.

I ask Allah (swt) to forgive all of us, our sins, and the dhunoob, and free us from Hell-fire.
